Using the Caller ID Prefix filter to control call Geo-routing
The Caller ID Prefix feature in Nimbata is designed to help you route incoming calls based on the location of the caller.
By analyzing the prefix (such as country code or area code) of a caller's phone number, Nimbata enables dynamic call routing to the appropriate destination, whether that’s a local office, regional sales team, or franchise location.
This functionality powers Geo-routing, a powerful tool for businesses that serve multiple geographic regions.
To use the Caller ID Prefix feature and effectively geo-route your calls, you must have an active Marketing or Agency subscription with us.
What is a Caller ID Prefix?
A Caller ID Prefix refers to the first few digits of a phone number, typically an area code or country code, that indicate where the call is originating from. Nimbata uses this information to determine how to route the call.
E.g.:
- A U.S. caller from area code 312 (Chicago) can be routed to your Midwest sales team
- A caller from the +44 country code (UK) can be routed to your international support line
- A call from area code 305 (Miami) could be routed to your Florida branch
When to Use Caller ID Prefix Routing
This feature is ideal for businesses that:
- Operate in multiple regions and want to route calls locally
- Support different time zones and need to distribute call loads efficiently
- Franchise businesses that want calls directed to the nearest branch
- Service providers with regional reps or localized offerings
- International businesses handling calls across countries and languages
How Caller ID Prefixing works
Once enabled, Caller ID Prefixes are matched against incoming calls. Based on your geo-routing configuration, calls are then forwarded to the destination number that you've assigned to that prefix or area code. This ensures callers reach the most relevant person or team, improving both the caller experience and your team’s efficiency.
Use case examples
- A law firm with offices in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles routes calls from area codes 212, 312, and 213 to their respective local offices.
- An HVAC service company forwards incoming calls from rural area codes to specific field agents responsible for those zones.
- A global SaaS provider automatically directs UK-based leads to their London sales team, while North American leads are routed to the U.S. headquarters.
