Tracking Numbers vs. Destination Numbers in Nimbata

Tracking numbers vs. destination numbers: What are the differences between them?

Nimbata uses two different types of phone numbers to power call tracking and call forwarding. Understanding the difference helps you set up tracking correctly and avoid routing issues:

  • Tracking numbers capture call data and attribution
  • Destination numbers receive the calls
  • Calls always flow from a tracking number to a destination number

Below is an explanation of how each one works and when to use them:

1. Tracking numbers

Tracking numbers are the phone numbers your customers see and call. They are owned and provisioned by Nimbata and are used exclusively for call tracking. They:

  • Are assigned to pages, listings, campaigns, or sources.
  • Capture attribution data like source, medium, and campaign.
  • Forward calls to one or more destination numbers
  • Appear in call logs, analytics, and reports

You add tracking numbers whenever you want Nimbata to track calls from a specific source, campaign, or page.

2. Destination numbers

Destination numbers are the phone numbers that receive the calls forwarded from tracking numbers. These are usually your business phone numbers. They:

  • Can be mobile, landline, VoIP, or call center numbers
  • Do not track attribution on their own
  • Can be reused across multiple tracking numbers
  • Control where calls are routed

You add destination numbers to tell Nimbata where incoming calls should be forwarded, e.g. a main office line, a call center, or an on-call technician.

How tracking numbers and destination numbers work together

Every tracked call in Nimbata follows the same path: Caller > Tracking Number > Destination Number

This separation allows Nimbata to track performance correctly and still deliver calls as usual to your existing setup.
