Google Ads call extension verification for tracking numbers
Why tracking numbers may fail verification and how to link Search Console
In some cases, Google Ads may not verify tracking numbers from third-party providers when they are used as call extensions.
This can happen when Google is unable to associate the phone number with the advertiser’s website during its verification process.
One way to help Google verify the association between your website and your Google Ads account is to link Google Search Console.
How to link the accounts
Step 1. Navigate to Data Manager in Google Ads:
Look for the Tools menu.
Sign in to your Google Ads account.
Click on the Tools icon (wrench) in the top navigation menu
Select Data Manager (in older layouts, this may be found under Tools & Settings > Linked accounts)
Step 2. Locate Search Console:
Scroll down to the "Featured products" or "Connected products" section.
Find Search Console and click Proceed (or Details).
Step 3. Enter your website URL:
Add both www and non-www versions.
Click the + (Plus) button or Link to add a new site. Enter the URL of the website you want to link.
Important Note: Google recommends adding one version with "www." and one without (e.g., www.example.com and example.com).
You do not need to include http:// or https://.
Step 4. Confirm the link status:
Click Link site:
- If your email is a verified owner in Search Console, the status will immediately show as Linked.
- If your email is not the owner, the status will show as Requested, and an access request will be sent to the current Search Console owner to approve.
🎉 That’s it! If the linking process is successful, you’ll see Linked in the Status column.
Linking Search Console does not guarantee verification of every tracking number, but it can help Google associate your website with your Google Ads account during the call extension review process.
